a list of events scheduled so we can take to businesses to get sponsors.
Ronnie said ACA wants
to have a rodeo and is to contact him.

Needing big speakers
for both sides of the Arena was mentioned.

MEETING MINUTES
DECEMBER 2007
Meeting called to
order by Ronnie at 7:10 pm Dec 6th.
Meeting attended by
Ronnie, Michelle, Leza and approx 15 members.
Leza read the November
minutes.
Michelle corrected
the November treasurers report.
Ronnie said there
is no new info from South Central or from ACA as to our hosting their events.
Leza suggested we
ask $150 for billboard signs above the chutes.
Leza brought up the
idea of adding board members to the officers roll. It would make the club more user friendly to the elected officers, as it
is now, if more that one officer misses a meeting, it can’t be held. She pointed out that the By-laws would need to
be changed.
There was discussion
on a better PA system and fixing up the announcers booth above the chutes. Leza suggested Cotham’s auction as a possible
source for bigger speakers.
There was quite a
bit of discussion on Playdays and Shows. Possibilities included skipping July and August, it’s too hot then, - alternating
show and speed into individual shows, - coordinating w/ other clubs. Ashley said she might be the chair if she could be assured
of enough help at the shows to be able to help her son Jace participate.
Ronnie reported that
the St Jude ride is set for May 1st. He also said he will chair the Cowboy Race again next year and it will be
on the 2nd Saturday of the month.
Dean Tabor reported
that he has talked with the Willow Springs club and they are willing to talk with us about coordinating /combining shows.
He also said a man
from Colorado might put on a Poker Ride for us next year.
There was discussion
on leaning toward renting the arena to outside contractors, i.e. Bull Bust etc., and the necessity of continuing the signed
contracts.
Leza asked about the
welding for the billboard signs (Bob Morgan is the welder) and said that Gary Smith is willing to help out with soliciting
advertising for 08.
Leza said that she
declined office for 08 but will still keep up the website for the club as long as the secretary and treasurer give her the
info to post.
There were a few mailed
in votes, and everyone present voted for officers. The votes were counted by John McIntare and Claudia Madden. The results:
President; Mel Snethern
11 – Dean Tabor 10
V. President; Ronnie
Simms 18 – Mel Snethern 3
Treasurer; Michelle
Simms 13 – Ashley Forrester 8
Secretary; Nora McIntare
3 – Colleen Snethern 17 – Leza Smith 1
Travis said he might
have a lead on stock for roping at the arena.
Ronnie adjourned the
meeting at 8:06 pm.

Member letter
on the Cowboy Race
The following letter
was written by Rita Judd:
“Thayer Mammoth
Spring Saddle Club:
Good going guys.
With so many others, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Extreme Cowboy Race. I hope many others have expressed their appreciation
and thanks for all the thought and hard work it has taken to make this a success. It has taken participation and cooperation
from some who will not receive much recognition.
When I heard that
this undertaking had been suggested, my first thought was that there was no way the club could launch and sustain a project
this demanding. It is satisfying to be proved wrong.
The action was addictive
to watch. There was an exchange of ideas among the diverse people who the race attracted. And I even learned the names of
some of our own club members as they were announced.
Once again, thanks
to all who worked on this. This was an event the club can really be proud to have hosted.
Rita Judd”
Thanks, Rita, for
taking the time to acknowledge a club success story. We all hope it will be even better next year and that more members will
venture down and give it a try.
In closing….
As your secretary
for the last year and a half, it has been both my pleasure and curse to assemble these newsletters for you all as well as
attend to other club business. The newsletters always seemed to be due when I was the busiest with personal farm chores. All
the officers have their personal lives that occasionally have to be set aside to attend the club. I’d like to add my
thanks to all the officers and all the member hands who don’t receive their due by a long shot. It’s been an honor
and a pleasure folks. Thanks, and see you all next year.

.
Ronnie explained his

Shane Mayberry and
Matt Palmer came to the meeting to talk about another Bull Bust. It was decided that they will rent the arena for the day

gate proceeds. We can operate the cook shack and all that is ours. It will be on Sept 29th.
Megan reported on
the July horse show. Thanks to Mel for working the arena. There were some new people there as well as most of the regulars.
There was discussion

Ronnie wants to put
together a trail ride when it cools off.
Ronnie set up St.
Judes for 08 for the first part of May.
Frank will find out
if the big sign is on state right of way or private property. If state, club will either pull it out, sell the permit, or
exchange it for another from Mark Harmon. His payment to the state for back fees was not authorized by the club and is considered
a donation by the club.
Meeting adjourned
by Ronnie at 8:29.
SEPTEMBER 2007
September meeting

so there was none.

My apologies for
the late and very short Newsletter. I’ve been having horse, time and computer problems and I just couldn’t do
any better for you all.
Here’s a neat
tip: Just when you need your horse to look his best, he lays down, right in his manure! A quick and easy way to remove those
pesky stains is to apply a bit of rubbing alcohol. It’s quick and it’ll make your horse look his best.

the meeting at 7:06 pm on July 5th.
All officers

Leza read the
June minutes.
Any decision
on the Highway Sign was tabled as the land owner didn’t attend as requested.
Ronnie reported
that the club has hired Brian Blankenship to do the maintenance yard work for the season. It was mentioned that the weeds
under the bleachers need to be taken care of.
Ronnie explained
why the Horse Pull has been cancelled; lots more work for us and lots less money for our effort.
Discussion
of how to handle the billboard signs, taking down the old unpaid and putting up the new paid signs. It was decided to remove
the spaces above the bleachers and lower the sign to the backs of the bleachers. Mel motioned, Leza 2nd, voted
and passed.
Ronnie said
the next judges for the Cowboy Race will be Don Hall and Bub for the Jrs. and Allan Mitchell and Brad Teague for the Srs.
The Playdays
were discussed. It was decided to have them even if only two people want to play. It was decided to start them at 7:30 pm.
Marcus, Claudia Madden and Don Hall all offered to help out with them.
Dwain Judd
is in the hospital. Michelle will get flowers sent, with a $100 limit. Ashley motioned, TJ 2nd, voted and passed.
Discussion
on having any more trail rides this year. Club hasn’t heard from Dean for community rides.
Ronnie asked
for Ideas for events for this year or for planning for next year.
Citywide yard sale –sell spaces at grounds
– next year
Fall Festival – have a booth? – this
year
Christmas Parade – ride this year?
Revive Drill Team – next year
Ashley said
she would check on free or low cost logo shirts for the club.
Michelle read
the treasures report: Starting Bal – 4447.89 Expenses – 2438.09 Deposits – 1521.53
Ending Bal – 3531.33
Ronnie will
check into hosting a tractor and a truck pull for this fall. We will rent them the arena and be named as co-insured on THEIR
insurance.
Meeting closed
at 8:17 pm.
Work Day one week after next meeting
The next meeting
will be on Thursday August 2nd at 7 pm. We will be getting together the following Thursday evening, the 9th,
at 7 pm also for a work day/evening. We need to attend to the billboard signs, get the new ones up and get the channel up
to relocate the old ones. If a few of you could bring hand tools, ladders, muscle, and we need a welder to get the channel
iron up. We thought working in the evening would be cooler and more attractive. We’ll rustle up some hot dogs or burgers
and soft drinks for workers.
Please come
and help for just a little while. If we pitch in together, we can easily get this last project done.
Cowboy Race
The winners
of the last race were; Billy Arnold, Amanda Shaw, Billy Arnold again on a different horse, and Don Hall.
The next race
is scheduled for August 11th at 9 am. Ronnie will have something new to add to keep us all guessing and learning.
Playday
It is scheduled
for August 16th at 7:30 pm.
Saddlebucks Shows
The weather
has been giving these shows a run for their money.
The 3rd
show had to be called right in the middle of it due to a downpour with lightening. Our judge decided that double points would
be given for the missed classes at the next show.
The day for
the 4th show dawned nice and then it clouded up and we had some rain. We set up and hoped for the best and the
rain held off until just as the trailers pulled out after the show. Then it unloaded on those of us still there to clean up
and put things away. We got wet, but it felt kinda good, we’d been hot and sticky all night.
High point winners for the 3rd show are; Leadline - Jace Forrester, 12 and up - Haley Kernodle, 13 thru 17 – none,
18 and up – Don Hall.
High point
winners for the 4th show are; Leadline – Felicity Rogers, 12 and up – Haley Kernodle, 13 thru 17 –
Amenta Garrison, 18 and up – Don Hall.
The next Saddle
buck Show is scheduled for August 25th at 7 pm, signups begin at 6 pm.
"The Horse"
Where in this wide world can
man find nobility without pride, Friendship without envy, or beauty without vanity? Here, where grace is served with
muscle. And strength by gentleness confined. He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity. There is
nothing so powerful, nothing less violent. There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient. ~Ronald Duncan, 1954

June 2007 Minutes
Meeting called to
order by Ronnie at 7:18 pm on June 7th.
.Leza read the May
minutes.
Michelle read the
treasures report: Beginning bal 2417.09, expenses 2157.62, deposits 4316.65, ending bal 4576.12.
Pete not at meeting.
Michelle reported
that she has more packets for the upcoming St. Judes ride.
Ronnie reported that
T.J. Donsoe and Bud Adams will be the Sr. Judges for the June Cowboy Race. Ronnie and Gary Smith will judge the Jr’s.
The 2nd
Saddlebuck Show was well attended, and Michelle reported a 399.25 profit.
Dwain & Rita
Judd donated 100.00 and a weed eater to the club.
St Jude was discussed,
need a band for Saturday. Ashley and Scott will try to find players. Ronnie did a promo on the radio for the Club and talked
about the St. Jude weekend.
The Cowboy Race was
discussed. It was decided to score a negative 25 points for anyone skipping an obstacle. Also to award 1st, 2nd, & 3rd
place prizes for each
race. There will be a competitors meeting before
each race to make
sure everyone understands the rules. Ronnie has received some donations for the race and wants to use them to buy airtime
for advertising.
Ronnie talked about
leasing cattle for roping and penning next year.
The club has been
approached about hosting a truck pull. A question was brought up about the waterlines that run under the arena. Ronnie will
get info on their location. The concessions and gate would be ours. Our only expense would be joining their association. Leza
to check with insurance about coverage.
Relita brought up
multi-runs by the same horse-rider combo at the Saddlebucks Shows. It was decided that only the top score would be counted
for a class.
Ronnie talked about
how important St. Jude is for kids in the Ozark area. He urged everyone to get pledges.
Hosting another bull
bust in the fall was brought up. It was discussed and tabled to a later meeting.
Hosting a regular
pro rodeo would be very expensive, probably around 4000.00. Ronnie suggested that we work hard this year and try to get enough
money together to host one next year.
D.J. Hall brought
the club a portable gate to use for the Cowboy Race.
The meeting was adjourned
at 8:10 pm by Ronnie.
Saddlebucks
Shows
The 2nd Saddlebuck show
was well attended and we had several riders remark on what a fun time they had. The High
Point winners were; Leadline – Felicity Rogers, 12 & under – Haley Kernodle, 13 through
17 – Aminta Garrison, 18 & over – Gail Hart.
The 3rd show was rained
out and was rescheduled for June 30th at 6:00 pm. This time the show was started but had to be called for rain
just before the Trail Class. Andrea Churchill, the show judge, suggested that all classes from the Trail Class on will receive
double points for the 3rd show riders. One set of points will be used to finish the 3rd
show and the other will be used for
the 4th show. Andrea will be the judge again. If you signed up for
the effected classes, please be sure to make the next show.
The 4th show will be on
July 28th at 7:00 pm.
Ozark
Cowboy Race
The 1st series race was
a huge success and ran very smoothly. Ronnie had added an obstacle or two to challenge the riders more than the demo race
did. Everyone seemed to
really enjoy the competition. He also
added daily prizes for 1st thru 3rd place.
In the Sr. division, 1st
place went to Billy Arnold, 2nd place to Don Hall, and 3rd place went to Jennie Wentworth. Billy Arnold
was also the winner of the daily jackpot. There were also riders in the Jr. division and they were awarded prizes just like
the big guys. Sorry but I don’t have their names handy.
Ronnie has new obstacles planned for
the next race as well as keeping most of the current ones. The course should get more and more interesting for both horse
and rider as the series progresses.
The next race is on July 14th
at 9 am.
St. Judes
The club riders
raised over $2500 in pledges. Thanks to all of you for the effort. Casey Simms was the top earner and won the saddle.
The food was very good and there was
a nice group of club members who stayed the night Friday and played games and visited. We didn’t get as many takers
on the BBQ as we had
hoped,
so it was a barely break even deal. We’ll just have to try harder to get the word out next year.
Horse
Pull
The Horse Pull scheduled for July
21st has been canceled by the club. When we tried to work out the details with the Puller Association, they needed
more from us than we were comfortable with. It was determined at an Officers Meeting that it would be best not to schedule
events that we have little hope of making enough money on for the amount of effort needed to make the event happen.
Monthly
Meetings
Monthly meetings are the 1st
Thursday of each month at 7 pm at the arena.
Playdays
Playdays are the 3rd Thursday
of the month at 7 pm.

MAY 07
MINUTES
Ronnie called
the meeting to order at 7:03pm on May 3rd.
Leza read
the April minutes.
Michelle
gave a treasures report: Beginning Balance 2530.93, Expenses 113.84, Ending Balance 2417.09
Mel reported
on attending the South Central Horse Shows meeting. He explained exactly how the show would work. Club members initially wanted
to have the show. Ronnie said that if the Club wants to have the Show, the members need to get out and hustle sponsors. After
more discussion, it was decided not to join South Central and host a show this year.
The feeling was that we have an ambitious schedule already for this year. We will want to have the show next year as a priority
event. Barb motioned, Scott 2nd, voted and passed.
There was
a discussion on FNBC possibly donating sand for the arena and the cost to the club for the hauling end of the project.
An idea to
see about combining our Saddlebucks Shows with the Willow Springs Series was brought up. Or alternately that we make an attempt to have a group of
our members
attend a Willow Springs show and see if
some of their
riders might come to our shows.
Relita Said Bob Lovens is the WS president and that she would get his phone # and schedule to Ronnie. It
was decided that the presidents should talk.
Leza reported
that we had decided to add Jackpot Barrels to the Pony Pull to add interest and length to the show. New flyers need to go
out and ads run in the Horsetrader.
We talked
about sponsoring a community flea market. The Cook Shack could also be open and we would sell spaces to vendors. Tabled until
next meeting.
Michelle
has received a call about the sign out by the highway that has the bushes planted in front of it. We need to either take it
down or pay the bill for it. Ronnie motioned, Pete 2nd to remove the sign. Voted and passed.
Ronnie wants
to buy a huge 3 sided billboard sign on wheels. Club decided ok up to $200. Barb motioned, Ronnie 2nd, voted and
passed.
Meeting adjourned
at 8:11pm.
UPDATED SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
There is an updated Schedule
of Events included with the newsletter. It should have all our events for the year on it. Would you please put it on your
fridge and keep it to refer to. That way if you don’t receive a newsletter right before one of the events you’ll
still know what’s going on with the club.
SADDLEBUCKS SHOWS
The 2nd show is
on June 2nd at 5 pm and the third show will be on June 23rd at 6 pm. The first show got good feedback
from the riders. We would like to see more riders attend. We have decided to keep the class fees at $2.00 and not charge a
gate fee this year. We hope offering you a bargain will encourage some more of you to attend. We have nice high point awards to offer as well as the Saddlebucks.
OZARK COWBOY RACE
The next Cowboy Race is on
June 9th at 9 AM in the morning. Everyone who tried out the trial run we had in May had a ball. We found that we
need more helpers on the field to keep everything running smoothly. Even if your horse isn’t a pushbutton trained horse,
bring him on in and give it a go, you’ll be in like company. The courses will start fairly easy and gain difficulty
as the series progresses. Besides maybe winning a jackpot or even a saddle, you’ll have a better relationship with your
horse by the end of the series.
THURSDAY NIGHTS
The Thursday night informal
gatherings are a great success this year so far. Lots of members are coming in and riding and just hanging out. Each 3rd
Thursday is the Playday night with horse games for all. Every other Thursday is just a ride as you wish night. We are glad
to see lots of new and old faces pulling in and riding.
PONY PULL & BULL BUST
Both events have come and
gone and both had good attendance. Thanks to the contractors for putting on two great shows for us. We were able to add money
to the coffers so we can continue to attract stock contractors to our arena. A HUGE THANK YOU to the Snethern family for manning
the Cook Shack for both events and serving great tasting food with a smile.
ST. JUDE IRONMAN RIDE
June 15th, starts
a t 5:30 PM, ends on the 16th whenever the last lap is ridden, the last morsel eaten or the last song played. This
event is shaping up to be a great time that can be had by all. Besides the Ironman laps, there will be burgers and horse games
on Friday night with live music. On Saturday morning there will be a Pancake Breakfast. Starting at 12 noon there will be
a catered BBQ. All food all weekend is by donation only and all profits will be donated by the Club to St Jude. There will
also be live music on Saturday. Hopefully there will be a
live remote by K-Kountry. We have a trophy saddle for the rider who brings in the most money in pledges.
Come on down and ride, eat
or visit. Bring your friends and neighbors too. Spread the word, St. Jude’s is a great cause.
GUEST COLUMN
Tomorrow will make eight months to the
day that I left my homeland and moved North to the Ozarks. I did so for many reasons, but most of all for the benefit
of my horses.
My home was situated on 40 acres in the middle of one of the last bastions of vanishing Old Florida.
Beautiful, fecund, wild, but not a friendly environment for my beloved Lipizzans - however, they flourished there.
Coming
into the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, you arrive in horse country. For years I
dreamed of green fields for my white horses. . . That dream becomes reality when I look out any window. You know the
old axiom, “Be careful what you ask for - you just might get it”. There’s good reason for that cautionary
note as this has almost been too much of a good thing.
If you are familiar with the breed background, you are aware
of their hardiness. They were developed from horses found on the Karst Plain; chalky, rough ground with sparse forage.
As someone who tries to do their homework, I knew grain had to be cut from their diet and to restrict turnout, but I’ve
really gotten an education since moving.
The cycles of cool season grasses and grazing management have become
an object of study as this is playing a vital role in the health and well being of my horses. I was prepared for the
spring flush of sugar in May but didn‘t realize there would be a repeat performance again in the fall. Heavy autumn
rains, warm days and cool nights, set the stage for a severe founder episode for my gelding, Cona. Happily, he continues
to improve, amazing us all by jumping the fence recently to rejoin his pasture mates after a long separation
and
taking a victory gallop to show his satisfaction. The credit goes to my farrier, Casey Cox, and veterinarian, Roger
Shaw, III. Without their expert care, this scenario wouldn’t have been possible.
At this writing
the fencing is still going up to protect against this hazard in the coming spring. It’s been difficult to put aside 23 years of horse keeping experience, and try to unlearn what you already know.
It continues to be a test and a challenge. Keeping yourself open to change, new information, and balancing intuition
and logic seem to be intrinsic in all aspects of our relationships with horses - from the ground up!
Catherine Rauschert January
18, 2007
Catherine is a new member
who is also new to the area. Thanks for sharing your settling in experiences
with us. I’d like to add that her fences are up and there have been no more problems for the horses this spring. Perhaps
we’ll see her riding one of the white beauties soon?
WORK DAY
The club needs your help.
We’ve scheduled a work day for June 10th at 1 pm. We really need some strong arms to help get down the unpaid
signs and put up the new signs for our sponsors. The club couldn’t get by without the generosity of our billboard sponsors
and we need to treat them with respect and honor our part of the agreement on billboard signs. Just Ronnie and a couple of
women can’t get it done alone.
There are also a couple more
new signs that need to be painted and, as always, the grounds need to be mowed and worked with weed-eaters.
Burgers and hotdogs with drinks
will be furnished by the club for all workers.
Please, come on down and help
out, it feels good to do good.

Jim from Thayer Farm Center
spoke and invited the club to attend a horse meeting at the Bub Ranch on May 1st.
Maxi Demmic spoke
about the South Central Show we are considering hosting. She brought SC Directories to hand out and invited us to attend their
next meeting to gather more info. There was discussion on show dates, and we decided that the preferred dates would be 8/10
& 11. There would be a $50 membership and the classes for the shows would be $50 each, for an approximate total of $2300.
Melvin Snethern volunteered to attend the SC meeting for the club. Voted and passed to have the horse show if feasible.
Ronnie reported on
discussion with Matt Palmer and Shane Mayberry for a Bull Bust. To be held May
25th & 26th. $800 added money + $250 for part of advertising. We get 50/50 on gate and all of the
cook shack. Voted and passed to have it.
The Horse Pull date
has been set for July 21st; it will be a mini/pony/draft pull. Voted and passed.
The lease was renewed
and permission to have the Cowboy Race outside the arena was ok-ed by the city council.
The St. Jude materials
just arrived. Awards were described by Michelle. It is set for the 15th & 16th of June. There was
discussion on how to promote it. The BBQ dinner will be donation w/ no profit for the club, all profit will go to St Judes
in the Club’s name. Pete will donate steaks for the BBQ.
Amended by-laws were
signed by all officers.
Ronnie brought up
having some Ranch Rodeos and said he will gather more information.
Leza explained that
insurance-wise the Trailrides must be community rides, not club rides. She is working on getting the insurance, went direct
to National Horseman Assoc. $ 650 for the first 6 events, can add more as we need to. Voted and passed, check written.
Pete said the Bank
of Thayer won’t sponsor us this year.
Ronnie thanked everyone
for their efforts at the workday.
Horsesmiths Farm will
donate steel to hang signs. Gary will see if there is more
steel the club can buy. Voted and passed.
Ronnie asked all members
to speak right up with their ideas, all input is welcome.
There was discussion
on Megan moving the Saddlebucks Show because of the Bull Bust, June 2nd was decided.
Radio advertising
was talked about. Leza will do community events listings and also get events on the channel 3 & 10 website calendars.
An idea to make a
club sponsored calendar for 2008 with advertising was brought up. We would need to get all events for next year scheduled
this fall and find advertisers. If we have everything in place for next year early, we could also bet better event sponsors
and donations.
Ronnie asked for volunteers
to seek donations and sponsors. Barb said she would try Dorsey at Stateline.
The Cowboy Race was
talked about again, 4 out of 5 events needed to qualify for high point.
It will get more and more difficult as the year progresses. There will be a daily optional jackpot.
Meeting adjourned
at 7:50 pm.
Ozark Cowboy Race
The first Cowboy
Race of the Season is set for May 12th at 11:30 am. This one will be free to everyone, a trial run on a new event
and will not count toward the year end high point. We hope
a whole bunch of you folks will bring your best horse down and see what it is all about. This event promises to be a lot of
fun for both riders and spectators.
Corrections and Additions to the Schedule
The May 12th
Cowboy race says 1:30 and it should be 11:30.
The June 1st
Saddlebuck Show needs to be changed to June 2nd.
A 9 am start time
has been decided on for all of the series Cowboy Races after the first one.
May 19th will also be a Mini-Horse Pull and Jackpot Barrel Race at 4 pm at the arena.
Workday
The April 1st workday was well attended by members just rarin’ to get things
done. It was a beautiful day; we had great BBQ, and a lot of fun. A huge thanks
to you all.

Special thanks to Dan Huber who
brought a super mower and did the whole grounds area plus the area we will be using for the Cowboy race.
Mini-Horse Pull and Jackpot Barrels
A late entry to our schedule, we
will host a mini pull, those tiny horses are just as awesome as the giant drafts. They’re all heart and try. A 100% payback Jackpot Barrels will follow the pull. $4.00
adults, $2.00 kids (under 12). May 19th at 4:00 pm.
Saddlebucks Fun Show
This 1st show has come
and gone. It was a nice little show; everyone seemed to have a good time. We would really like more of you to join in and
make it even better. The next show date is June 2nd at 5 pm, signups at 4. We have really nice awards this year
and of course the “Saddlebucks”.
St. Jude Ironman Ride
Scheduled for June 15th
& 16th. This ride will be at the arena. We will be doing laps for as long as we can sit our horses. It’s
a “last man standing” kinda challenge.
Start gathering your pledges early.
By the lap, by the hour, by the mile, however you can gather up money for a great cause.
Maybe some of you members who are not too active in the club could show your support by MAKING a pledge that could
be picked up by one of the Ironman riders. A pledge is a great way to help St. Judes without getting on their mailing and
call list, just fill that part in real sloppy.
There will also be a catered BBQ
fit for feasting on the 16th. It will be a donation offering and all profits will go to St Jude also. Tell all
your friends to come eat hardy.
Bull Bust
May 25th & 26th
will have the arena filled with roughstock riders and livestock. Put on by M5 and Rockin P Rodeo Company, they have been wowing
the crowds this year with their excellent shows. We are please to host them and hope you will all attend.

GUEST COLUMN
Excerpts from an article
by Jim Overstreet.
….My Mother pointed
it out to me when I was nine or ten trying to ride across a bridge, “If you start something with a horse, you have to
finish it.” And not long ago in a conversation with a horse trainer who has made a living breaking, training and showing
all kinds of horses for many years he said “You can’t let them get away with anything.”
That’s about as clearly as you can state what most people consider the First Principle of Horsemanship.
The concept is twofold.
First the horse is a powerful creature that we bend to our will. If we ask the horse to do something and the horse doesn’t
do it, then we have to make him do it or we will create a bad habit. Second, if a horse successfully refuses in one instance,
he is more likely to in others as well.
The principal appears
so obvious that it’s hard to doubt. The trouble is, it is not always true. And, when you work under the assumption that
it is a universal truth, you can create problems that will last the horse’s lifetime.
I’ve found that most of the times when this principle is true is in situations caused by people not being aware
of their horse and asking too much at a given time, creating conflict that should never have arisen.
Ever since I began to
understand that there were times you could back off from a confrontation with your horse and either gain something or at least
not loose ground, I’ve been trying to figure out how to know the difference between situations where you can back off
and when you’d better fight and win.
My unlearning has taken
a considerable time.

FEBURARY MEETING MINUTES
Meeting called to order by President Ronnie Simms at 6:50 PM. He read the January minutes to catch
up on what he had missed at the last meeting.
The bylaws were discussed and suggestions for amendments were made by Barb Howell, Michelle Simms and Leza
Smith.
Ronnie asked for volunteers for the Playday and Trail Ride chairs.
The meeting location was discussed and it was decided to have the next meeting at the Country Cottage at
6:30 PM. Barb will check with Simmons Bank on their meeting room as a possibility for next winter.
Leza designed a letterhead for the club and received approval to send out sponsor sign renewal letters.
There was talk about the signs. There are still 5 signs that need to be made that were paid for last year.
Air-Evac, Cooper Heating, Beverage Shop and Reata Farm.
It was decided we need a contract form for use with outside eventers and sponsors. Leza to research and
make one up for club.
The various types of Rodeos that were suggested at the Jan meeting were narrowed down to looking for a
Family Rodeo Association who would like to have their events at our arena.
Ronnie feels we should pass on having a Bull Bust this year, as they were not very profitable last year.
Dean Tabor volunteered to be the Trail Boss again this year. He was asked to try to schedule rides in advance
so we can have plenty of time to let all members know about them.
Barb Howell will be Playday chair again this year. She will try to come up with year end prizes for the
playdays and will keep them scheduled on the third Thursday of the month.
Megan Rogers reported on
her ideas for the Fun Shows. She wants to offer “Saddlebucks” in addition to ribbons. She also wants to have varied
events and rain dates for any shows that need to be cancelled. Her plans were approved, motion made by Ronnie, 2nd
Michelle, voted and passed.
Ronnie checking on sponsoring a two day sanctioned Horse Show, gaited one day and Qtr. type one day. He
would like to see it happen late in the year when folks are looking for points.
Ronnie reported on the Horse Pull. Wants to put on a large added money pull for all three classes of pullers.
Ronnie and Pete are already working on sponsors for the added money.
Ronnie outlined his ideas for the Ozark Cowboy Race. Asked for ideas on obstacles; would like to have High point
saddles; five monthly events; classes will get harder through the year; two age groups; all breeds welcome; asked for judges.
Ronnie suggested a St. Judes Ride that would be an “Ironman Ride”, would last for 48 hours
and riders would collect pledges for laps ridden around the gravel road around the arena.
Leza brought up that the City needs to be paid our yearly $1.00 for the club to keep the grounds. Ronnie
and Michelle will see it gets done.
Leza brought up that Channel 10 has a televised Calendar of Events for non-profit orgs. Pete should look
into it. Ronnie added that the local cable TV channel also has very low cost advertising.
Michelle read the treasurers report;
Beginning balance: 2240.84 Expenditures: 123.75 Deposits: 144.00 Ending balance: 2261.09
Year end awards were handed out.
Meeting closed by Ronnie at 8:44 PM.
********
NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be held at the Country Cottage Restaurant on Hwy.
19 , Thayer. They have offered to stay open an extra half hour for us, so we will start the meeting promptly at 6:30 PM. They
have offered their meeting room to us at no charge as long as some of us eat during the meeting. Please plan to come to the meeting and enjoy a nice evening out.
SADDLEBUCKS SHOWS
Our Fun Shows will have a new twist this year, in addition to the traditional
class ribbons, we will offer a choice of receiving Saddlebucks. They will have dollar amount value according to class placement.
They can be redeemed at local participating merchants just like cash. You can save up for something big or spend them as you
win them, your choice.
The shows will also have an alternating lineup, so you don’t have
to have the same classes every show. There will be 7 shows this year starting in April. Megan is working hard to find sponsors
for daily high point awards and really good year end awards. There will be a schedule and sign up sheets available shortly.
OZARKS COWBOY RACE
Everyone who has heard Ronnie’s ideas for this Cowboy race is really
excited about it. It promises to be a whole lot of fun for all our members, no matter what your riding or breed discipline,
you can be a part of this. Ronnie plans to start the obstacles out fairly easy and keep making them more challenging as the
year progresses. If you haven’t seen Craig Cameron’s Cowboy race on RFD TV, find a friend who gets that channel
and take a look. It’s lots of fun to watch and it makes me want to go out and saddle up every time I see it. It’s
working with your horse over an extreme trail course. We plan to have 5 monthly events at least and advertise it well. This
could get to be a really huge event for the club.
Ronnie’s idea is that part of all the entry fees will go toward
year end trophy saddles.
We’ll have lots more information about this fabulous event as the
plans firm up, so stay tuned!!
GUEST COLUMN
Still no takers? Come on folks, I know horse people love to talk “horse”.
I had a suggestion for a “Tried
and True Remedies” space. Maybe you’d all be more up for contributing to that instead?
TRIED & TRUE REMEDIES
OK, I’ll start, but I need some help to keep this one going…
Any of you that know me, probably have heard me talk about my barefoot
horses. I’m a die-hard barefoot fan. One thing I can do for new horses
that come to me in shoes is pull them and then help the horse toughen up their soles and walls by soaking their feet in a
half and half mix of water and apple cider vinegar. It isn’t magic, I have to stay with it a while, but it really does
work. It helps them to have tough feet a lot sooner than they would without it.
So there you have it, one of my secret remedies. I’ll bet lots
of you have them, homemade fly sprays, first aids and such that you could share. How about it? Just give me a call anytime.
BUY, SELL OR TRADE
I’m willing to include member classifieds on a first come, space allowing basis. Again just give me a call anytime.
Here’s a couple I just happen to know about:
Nora McIntare has round bale feeder rings for sale, if you need some give her a call at 264-2213
Gary Smith has a Cowboy Tack 18” saddle for sale. Great shape, outstanding quality. $800. 264-7455
RAIN DATES
At the last
meeting we discussed having rain dates for all the events we are the sole sponsors of this year. It was decided that we have
a new rule, “Set in Stone”, all our planned events will happen!! The rain date will be the next week following
the cancelled event. This holds true for Saddlebucks Shows, Playdays, and the Cowboy Race dates.
MEMBERSHIPS
The deadline
for your dues is March 31st. This is your final notice. Any members still unpaid will stop receiving newsletters
after this one. Thanks to all of you who have been very prompt in sending in your checks and forms. If you didn’t fill
out a form with your check, there is one included again this month.
BYLAWS
The proposed changes to the Club Bylaws are included with your newsletter.
Please read them over and if you disagree with way of the amendments, please attend the next meeting, email via the website,
or give any of the officers a call.
Spring is just around the corner, oil that moldy tack and curry that hairy horse.
Hope to see you all at the next meeting.

January Meeting Minutes
Meeting called to order at 7 PM by Vice President Pete Cooper. President Ronnie Simms was called out of town to help with
the severe Oklahoma snow storm.
Pete asked the members for ideas on events;
The Snethern's asked if we can have more shows and events for gaited horses. There was conversation on past shows requirements,
gaited and regular.
Pete reported that he and Ronnie came up with the idea of putting on an Extreme Cowboy Race, something like the one that
Craig Cameron hosts on RFD TV. We could have ours be a monthly event in different locations with points accruing for a grand
prize at the end of the year.
Pete also suggested putting on trail rides, organized ones like St. Judes. Don Hall announced that he is sponsoring a
St. Judes Ride on the 14th & 15th of September.
Pete said that Horse Pulls are being planned. Hopefully one in spring and one in the fall.
Pete also suggested that we have local folks put on basic clinics for the local kids, teach correct handling, saddling
and riding. Thought it would be a great way to get more whole families involved in the club again.
Barb is still working on a Horsemanship clinic by Buster McClerry.
Ranch Rodeos, Little Britches Rodeos, 7 event Rodeos and Bull Busts were also mentioned as events our members would like
to see happen.
Pete thought that comment slips should be included with the next newsletter so that folks who are unable to attend meetings
can make suggestions by mailing them in and also so that members can make notes to bring to the meetings.
Leza reported the copy machine is not working, won't pick up paper anymore. There was discussion on how to replace it,
another copier or a printer. It was decided to go with a printer that can also work without a computer for use at the arena.
Barb motioned and a vote was taken to authorize Michelle to purchase one.
We need someone to handle advertising for the club meetings and events. Barb nominated Pete to do it.
Extra membership applications were handed out to all the officers.
A press release on the new officers and website was reported done by Leza. She also asked for help on determining current
sponsors.
Michelle reported the yearly insurance is coming due and we need to decide how many events to report. Pete suggested Michelle
talk with our insurance rep and get black and white numbers and can and cannot do's from them and have that information ready
for the next meeting.
Ashley motioned that all old officers be removed from the bank signature card and new officers added. David Gains 2nd.
Signers this year will be Pete, Michelle and Leza. Ronnie declined as his wife is treasurer.
A few signs didn't get made last year and will be free to those sponsors this year.
Year end awards for the Fun Shows will be handed out at the February meeting.
Barb motioned that the Bylaws will be reviewed and amended at the February meeting and voted on at the March meeting.
Michelle 2nd. The February meeting will start at 6:30 PM so we don't run so late.
Leza suggested Michelle keep a ledger for the Club that details money in and money out in addition to the checkbook. Pete
asked her to purchase a ledger.
Minutes for December were read and approved.
A motion was made by Pete and 2nd by Barb to add Leadline classes to this years Fun Shows.
There was discussion about putting together a big Horse Pull with added money that would draw many teams and trying to
interest RFD TV in televising it.
Relita motioned, Barb 2nd and Pete adjourned the meeting at 8:19 PM.
Next Meeting
The next meeting is on February 1st at 6:30 PM at the Stateline Restaurant. We have been getting quite a few members in
for the meetings lately and a larger room would be welcome. Anyone have any ideas for a no cost meeting place.
Year End Awards
Every one who was a participant in the ’06 Fun Shows has a lead rope waiting for them. They will be passed out
at the February meeting.
Comment Slips & Membership Applications
There is a comment slip included with this newsletter as well as a Membership application. If you've any ideas about events
or would just like to let us know about your interests, please take the time to send it in along with your membership. Memberships
are due by March 1st.
By-Laws
We will be reviewing and amending the by-laws at the next two meetings. There is a copy of the current by-laws available
on the website. We will include a copy of the proposed changes with the next newsletter. If you are interested in the club
rules and regulations, you should attend these meetings.
Guest Column
I haven't had any takers on the column so far. Come on folks, share some hors-ey stuff OK?
Local Horse Magazine
Maybe some of you already know about this one, but it's new to me. It's called HEARTLAND HORSEMAN. It has some training
articles, seasonal articles, tips for places to ride, fairly local advertising and is willing to give some space to local
saddle clubs.
If we send in our newsletters they'll let their readers know what we are up to. Pretty cool!!
They also ask for trail riders from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio to submit photos and
a story about their favorite trail.
This month they have a really good article on frostbite. I saw a horse at an auction not long ago that had lost part of
his ears to frostbite, so it can happen here. He ended up with strange little teddy bear looking ears. He seemed to be a good
horse and probably could have been saved that happening to him if his owner subscribed to this magazine.
I think a local oriented horse magazine deserves a look - see. They're also online at www.heartlandhorseman.com or you
can call 1-800-642-3564.
See ya' all at the next meeting
